Transforming Limiting Beliefs

Most of us have experienced limiting beliefs and the way these beliefs can hold us back from reaching our full potential and living the life we desire. Of course, these self-imposed barriers often come from past experiences, negative self-talk, fear and even societal conditioning. However, it’s not all bad news as these pesky limiting beliefs can be transformed and make us stronger, wise, and more determined to step into our power and claim the happiness and success we were born to achieve.

So how do we go about transforming these stubborn negative beliefs? It starts with self-awareness - taking an honest look at ourselves and our beliefs. 

A. Name And Recognize Your Beliefs:

The very first step in overcoming limiting beliefs, is to become aware of the thought patterns which are causing self-doubt and fear. Of course, fear is always at the root of limiting beliefs - and this fear could be caused by fear of a past trauma or even repeating itself, or fear from seeing someone else fail, or even fear of success… Of course, this is a very small list of the roots of fear, but it does help to recognize that fear is at the root of all limiting beliefs. 

So, take a closer look at the thoughts and fears that may be hindering your progress. Question whether they are valid - challenge their accuracy. Are these fears based on facts or are you allowing your imagination to run away - creating negative scenarios which will probably never happen..? By naming the beliefs, and acknowledging them, you can start to see them for what they truly are: fears not facts, and those limitations that can be transformed and overcome. 

B. Make a List Of Your Limiting Beliefs And Fears

Tap into your fears and be honest with yourself. Listing these fears often helps us to put them into perspective and see them for what they are - just fears!

It’s a great idea to draw a table with 5 columns … at the top of each column write these headings: Limiting Belief, Positive Belief, Evidence, Learnings, Action 

THE PROCESS

1. Limiting Beliefs And Fears

Start by making a list of the negative beliefs and fears which hold you back. 

2. Create Positive Beliefs: 

Reframe those negative beliefs and fears! This is a fun process where you list the exact opposite of your negative belief. 

For example:

I don’t believe I can do this -> I totally believe in myself, and I know I can do this

I always fail -> I have failed sometimes, and I really learned a lot - now I can take this wisdom, do it again, and get it right this time

Good things only happen to other people -> Lots of good things have happened to me and I’m going to choose to focus on the positive things in my life

There is too much competition -> I embrace the competition because it gives me the opportunity to prove myself

The economy is bad, and there are no opportunities -> there are unlimited opportunities - opportunities are everywhere

I always attract the wrong people -> I attract wonderful positive and supportive people who love and care about me

I'm stupid... I always make the wrong choices -> I take time to think things through and make good decisions which empower me and my path of self-development 

Have fun with this process… make your positive statement exciting and empowering… tap into positive emotions and childlike joy and expectations. Give yourself permission to create the best outcome - create statements that align with your hopes and desires…

The beauty of this process is that these positive affirmations will start to replace the negative self-talk, allowing you to step into hope and joy by creating an empowering mindset.

3. Evidence

Challenge your assumptions and look for evidence! Many of our limiting beliefs are rooted in generalizations and assumptions that lack any real concrete evidence. So challenge these assumptions! Look for real-life examples and evidence that contradict them. 

Do some research, look for success stories of people who have overcome similar obstacles. Collect evidence to counter the limiting beliefs. In this way you can shift your perspective and switch to opening yourself up to new possibilities.

4. Learnings

Fear of failure results in limiting beliefs, which cause us to play it safe and avoid putting ourselves out there. So how do you overcome this? By reframing the way you see failure. 

Start to embrace your previous failures and setbacks as a learning experience! What did you learn that you could not have learned in any other way? Successful people see failure as a learning process - they take the learning and transform it into wisdom and success. 

This is a powerful process worth cultivating. Begin to see setbacks as stepping stones toward progress. Embracing failure and learning from it allows you to develop strength, wisdom, resilience, adaptability, and determination. 

5. Action

Take action and surround yourself with positivity: 

Resolve the past / overcome limiting beliefs with therapy. Hypnotherapy is a gentle but powerful way to let go of the past and shift limiting beliefs. 

Read self-help books & listen to podcasts - this is a powerful way to help the mind to cultivate positive thought patterns and beliefs.

Research success stories and study how this person achieved their success.

Connecting to a support system of like-minded people / groups who share your new positive beliefs and optimism is empowering and fun.

Surrounding yourself with positivity and helps you stay motivated and inspired on your journey of transformation.
